Macroom Buffalo Farm

Difficulty Easy

Hidden among the green fields of County Cork lies Macroom Buffalo Farm, home to Ireland’s first and largest herd of free-roaming, grass-fed water buffalo. This family-run working farm offers a fascinating glimpse into an unexpected side of Irish agriculture, where Italian water buffalo have settled remarkably well into the lush Cork countryside.

During your visit, you’ll meet these gentle and wonderfully curious animals while learning how the farm’s story began with the arrival of its first buffalo from Italy in 2009. Your guide will explain how the herd is cared for, what makes buffalo milk special and how it is transformed into delicious Irish-made mozzarella, burrata, ricotta, yoghurt and other farmhouse products.

The experience brings together farming, food and local storytelling in a relaxed and personal way. You’ll discover the journey from pasture to plate, meet the people behind the farm and gain a real appreciation for the passion and hard work that go into producing artisan food in rural Ireland.

Why we love it

Where else would you expect to find a herd of water buffalo roaming happily through the Cork countryside?
