Sweeping across a Highland valley near the shores of Loch Shiel, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks. Its 21 magnificent arches curve gracefully through a landscape of rugged mountains, deep green hills and open skies, creating a scene that feels as though it belongs in another world.
Opened in 1901, the viaduct carries the West Highland railway line between Fort William and Mallaig. At 380 metres long, it remains the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland and an impressive achievement of Victorian engineering. A short uphill walk leads to a viewpoint where you can appreciate the full scale of the structure and the dramatic countryside surrounding it.
Film fans will instantly recognise the viaduct from the Harry Potter films, where it formed part of the route travelled by the Hogwarts Express. If the timing is right, you may see the Jacobite steam train sweeping across the arches, trailing clouds of steam as its whistle echoes around the glen—a moment worth waiting for.
