Standing on its own little island where three sea lochs meet, Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most iconic sights in the Scottish Highlands. Surrounded by dark water, forested hills and distant mountains, the castle appears almost too perfectly placed to be real—especially when its stone walls are reflected in the still waters below.
Cross the elegant stone bridge to explore a castle whose story stretches back to the 13th century. Once a stronghold connected with Clans Mackenzie and MacRae, Eilean Donan witnessed centuries of clan rivalry, rebellion and conflict. It was largely destroyed during the Jacobite Rising of 1719 and remained in ruins for almost 200 years before being carefully restored by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap.
Inside, stone passageways, period furnishings and historic displays bring the castle’s turbulent past to life. Outside, the surrounding lochs and Highland scenery provide beautiful views in every direction. Its wonderfully romantic setting has also made Eilean Donan a popular filming location and one of Scotland’s most photographed castles.
