Rising dramatically above the Trotternish Peninsula, the Old Man of Storr is one of the Isle of Skye’s most recognisable natural landmarks. This towering rock pinnacle stands among a strange and spectacular landscape of jagged cliffs, rolling hills and ancient rock formations, often wrapped in drifting Highland mist.
The walk climbs steadily from the roadside through open moorland towards the rocky sanctuary beneath the Storr. As you gain height, the views become increasingly impressive, stretching across the Sound of Raasay to distant mountains and islands. The trail is well defined, but its steep and uneven sections require sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness.
Like many places on Skye, the Old Man is surrounded by folklore. One legend claims that the pinnacle is the thumb of a giant buried beneath the hillside, while another suggests its outline resembles the face of an elderly man. Whatever story you choose to believe, standing beneath this enormous stone formation is a humbling experience.
