Everything You Want
to Know Before You Travel
Have questions about our tours or travelling in Ireland? You’re in the right place. We know that planning a trip — especially one as exciting as exploring Ireland — comes with plenty of questions. Whether you’re wondering what to pack, how to book, what kind of accommodation to expect, or how the weather might behave (spoiler: it changes a lot), we’re here to help you feel fully prepared and confident before you travel.
Tour Basics
Start here for the essentials. From group sizes to departure points, this section covers the core details that make Valhalla Tours unique — small groups, thoughtful pacing, and plenty of personal attention.
Where do your tours depart from?
Our 14 day Like a Local, our 6 day Northern Odyssey and 5 day Ancient Voyage tours start from the Molly Malone Statue on Suffolk Street, Dublin.
Our 8 day Kingdom of Rebels tour starts outside the Hardiman Hotel in Galway city.
Our bespoke tours can depart from either Dublin airport or a hotel of your choosing.
What is the minimum and maximum group size?
Our tours run with a minimum of two people — so you can book with confidence. We cap groups at 15 to keep things personal, comfortable, and relaxed.
Are there luggage restrictions?
Yes — due to limited space in our vehicle, we ask that each guest limit luggage to one bag no larger than 32” (80cm) on its longest side.
What is your payment procedure?
A deposit of €250 secures your booking. You can pay the remainder in instalments or all at once. Full balance is due 60 days before departure. For bookings within 60 days, payment is required in full.
Travel
& Logistics
Planning your arrival and departure? Wondering how we handle changes or cancellations? This section covers everything you need to know to travel smoothly and stress-free.
Is airport collection/drop-off included?
Only our bespoke private tours include airport transfers. Standard tours do not offer this service.
What happens if Valhalla Tours cancels a tour?
Cancellations are rare. With just two guests, your tour is guaranteed to run. In exceptional cases (like a global event), we follow all government guidelines. If needed, we’ll happily defer your booking to a future date.
What if I need to cancel my tour?
You can defer your tour up to 90 days prior to your tour start date so long as your new tour date is at least 3 months or more in advance of your original tour date.
In terms of refunds, deposits are non-refundable. Cancellation 61 days or more prior to tour start date there is a 100% refund minus deposit. All tour payments are non-refundable 60 days prior to tour start date. Our office must be notified in writhing of a cancellation, this will determine the type of refund due.
What documents do I need?
First and foremost, you will need your passport. Make sure it is at least 6 months in date.
You will also need confirmation that you have booked a seat on your tour. This confirmation will be emailed to you upon full payment of your tour plan.
If you are travelling to Northern Ireland, you will need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), more details below.
Visas
& Entry
Before you pack your bags, make sure you’re ready to enter Ireland with confidence. Here you’ll find answers about visas, legal requirements, and age limits.
Do I need a visa to travel to Ireland?
Visitors from some countries will require a visa. Please check with your local Irish embassy before travelling.
What if my tour visits Northern Ireland?
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. If your tour crosses the border (which many do), you may also need to meet UK entry requirements. The UK has introduced a system called the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visitors from certain countries. A quick Google search of “Electronic Travel Authorisation for entering the UK” will get you where you need to be.
What’s the legal drinking age in Ireland?
18 years old.
Are there age restrictions on your tours?
Yes — we recommend a minimum age of 15 for general tours. Families with younger travellers should explore our bespoke private tour options.
Packing
& Preparation
Not sure what to bring? Ireland’s weather is famous for keeping you on your toes. We’ve got helpful tips on clothing, weather, and the types of stays you can expect.
What should I pack for Ireland?
Layers — lots of them! Include lightweight waterproof jackets, trousers, and ideally waterproof footwear. Irish weather can be unpredictable, but with the right gear, you’ll be ready for anything.
What’s the weather like in Ireland?
It’s famously changeable! Expect mild temperatures (15–25°C in summer) and the occasional shower — or three. While we do get sunshine, you’re more likely to fall in love with the misty hills and dramatic skies.
What kind of accommodation do we stay in?
Expect a thoughtful mix of top-rated hotels and quaint guesthouses — always chosen for comfort, charm, and local character. All our accommodations are centrally located so you can enjoy the towns you stay in each night.
Accessibility
& Flexibility
We want everyone to enjoy the journey. Here’s what to know if you have mobility concerns, want to skip an activity, or need a more personalised pace.
Are the tours wheelchair-friendly or suitable for limited mobility?
Foldable wheelchairs are welcome on the bus, but guests must be able to board unassisted. Some older accommodations may not have lifts. We’ll do our best to request ground-floor rooms, but it’s not guaranteed. A moderate level of fitness is recommended for our active itineraries.
Do I have to take part in every activity?
Not at all. This is your tour. If you’d rather skip a hike or site visit in favour of a quiet coffee and people-watching, that’s absolutely fine.
Comfort
& Convenience
The little things matter. From laundry to plugs, tipping to downtime, this section answers all those day-to-day questions that make travel more comfortable.
Can I do laundry during the tour?
Yes — laundry facilities are available at any of our two-night stops to keep you fresh and ready for adventure.
Do I need an electrical adaptor?
Yes — Ireland uses the UK-standard 3-prong 240v outlet. Bring a couple of adaptors for your devices.
Is tipping expected in Ireland?
Tipping is entirely at your discretion. A typical tip for great service is 10–15%, and 20% for something truly exceptional.
