Craft Village of Ardara

Difficulty Easy

Tucked away in the scenic heart of County Donegal, Ardara (Ard an Rátha) is a town that beats to the rhythm of creativity and tradition. Known as one of Ireland’s finest craft hubs, Ardara exudes a charm that is both timeless and alive, with its winding streets, cheerful shopfronts, and a warm community spirit. This small but vibrant town invites visitors to slow down and savour its deep connection to heritage, where generations of craftspeople have passed down their skills with pride and care.

A highlight of any visit is the Donegal Designer Makers Gallery, where you’ll find a thoughtfully curated showcase of local artistry. From richly woven textiles and intricate jewellery to delicate ceramics and fine photography, each piece reflects the natural beauty and cultural soul of the northwest. Meeting the makers themselves and hearing the stories behind their work adds an intimate and meaningful dimension to the experience—this is not just shopping, it’s storytelling through craft.

Just a short stroll away, the Ardara Heritage Centre offers an immersive look into one of the town’s most famous exports: Donegal tweed. Set in the historic old Courthouse, the centre takes you through the journey of the fabric, from sheep and spinning wheels to the looms that have shaped the region’s economy and identity. With its deep-rooted respect for tradition and its thriving creative spirit, Ardara is more than a town—it’s a living museum of Irish craft and culture, where every thread, brushstroke, and fired pot carries the soul of Donegal.

Why we love it

This sleepy little village is holding it's own through craft, supporting the local sheep farmers. The restaurants are helping to keep the fishermen going. When everyone pulls together they can make things happen. Be sure to pop into the Corner Bar to meet some locals and listen to some traditional Irish music.
