Explore Inis Mór – Cycle or Bus Tour Options

Difficulty Moderate

Once you arrive on Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands, you have the freedom to explore the island in a way that best suits your pace and spirit of adventure. For the more active traveller, renting a bicycle is a fantastic way to experience the island’s raw beauty up close. The roads are quiet and the scenery is spectacular—rolling fields bordered by dry stone walls, ancient ruins dotting the landscape, and the vast Atlantic stretching out beside you. With mostly flat terrain and a few gentle hills, cycling is a rewarding and immersive way to connect with this timeless place.

If you prefer a more relaxed option, hop aboard a guided minibus tour with a local driver who knows every stone and story on the island. These tours are ideal for those who’d rather take in the sights without the physical exertion, offering fascinating commentary, photo stops, and plenty of insight into island life—past and present. It’s a great way to cover more ground while still getting a rich sense of place, history, and culture.

Whether on two wheels or four, the highlights of Inis Mór include the awe-inspiring prehistoric fort of Dún Aonghasa, perched atop sheer cliffs, the mystical Worm Hole (Poll na bPéist), and traditional thatched cottages scattered across the rugged landscape. Whichever option you choose, your time on the island promises to be a memorable encounter with one of Ireland’s most unique and culturally preserved regions.

Why we love it

This island is home to the Áran sweater, these beautifully hand crafted jumpers have been made here for generations. Each family having their own style and design. This was a proud badge of honour for each family but also an identification if any men were to be lost to the sea.
